Here is the second air racer caricature I was working on…. all finished. This aircraft is a P-51R… basically a P-51 Mustang with Lear jet wings, F-86 tail and a counter-rotating propeller driven by a Griffin engine. Built by the Levitz-Rogers Unlimited air racing team. She was a very clean and sleek racer. I happened to be at the 1999 air races when I got my first look at this beautiful racer. She was one of the racers I was looking forward to seeing that year. Unfortunately during the heat race on Saturday she was lost with her pilot Gary Levitz after rounded the first pylon on the second or third lap. To honor a great racer and a beautiful machine here is “Miss Ashley II”

In a few weeks the aviation world will turn it’s eyes to Reno for the National Championship of Air Racing. The annual event celebrates the worlds fastest motorsport. The first caricatures I did were of the racers the year they had to be cancelled due to 9-11. Everything was grounded. Anyway here is a new caricature with a racing theme. The race modified P-51 Mustang “Stiletto”. This radical racer had the famous belly scoop removed and a massive weight reduction program. She won the National Championship her first year, 1984, in the capable hands of her pilot Skip Holm.

Also completed this week is my second B-17G caricature. “Nine O Nine”, flew 140 missions during the war and 126 of those without an abort. That’s one lucky lady. Let me know what you think.

The second caricature based on this pilot is the P-51D he was given after the shoot down when they knew the press would be all over the story. This shiny new bird had a special paint job just for the occasion. It is always confussed with the aircraft he was actually flying at the time… an F-6D recon Mustang.

Here is the latest caricature. Actually there are two versions of this caricature. Capt. William Shomo received the Medal of Honor for a mission where he shot down 7 Japanese aircraft 6 Ki-61 Tony’s and a Betty bomber. Here is the Mustang he was flying that day he shot down the aircraft.
